Warsaw was the capital of the Kingdom of Poland within the Russian Empire. Situated on the banks of the Vistula River, it was the cultural and commercial center of Poland and one of the chief cities of Eastern Europe. Its population was 436,750 in 1887, about one-third of which was Jewish.[1]

In 1883, Wilhelm von Ormstein, King of Bohemia, made a "lengthy sojourn" in the city, where he met Irene Adler, prima donna of the Imperial Opera of Warsaw. The two entered into a relationship, which on its termination left Adler in possession of several documents the King felt could compromise his honor. Fear of her releasing them led him to seek Sherlock Holmes' help in recovering them, the results of which are chronicled in "A Scandal in Bohemia".

Trivia[]

  • There was no "Imperial Opera" in Warsaw; the closest analogy is the Grand Theater, opened in 1833, one of the largest theaters in the world.
