Tom was the former boyfriend and fiancé to Molly Hooper.
Tom is first mentioned, before appearing, when Sherlock sees Molly's engagement ring and congratulates her on finding someone. Molly smiles and tells Sherlock that she is moved on and jokingly assures Sherlock that Tom is not a sociopath, a reference to Jim Moriarty, whom Molly had previously dated. The couple met during the two years Sherlock was "dead". Molly says that they met through friends, have adopted a dog, and that she has met his family.
Molly says that she has gotten over Sherlock. However, it is later implied that this might not be completely true as Tom shares superficial similarities with Sherlock including being tall, thin, and dressed in a very similar coat and scarf.
Sherlock later deduces that Molly's relationship with Tom is over after he sees that she is no longer wearing her engagement ring.
