The Kingdom of Rumania was a country located in southeastern Europe. Rumania bordered on Austria-Hungary and Serbia to the west, the Russian Empire to the north and east, and Bulgaria to the south. Its capital was Bucharest. The kingdom was founded in 1881, following Rumanian independence from the Ottoman Empire. Its language, Rumanian (now Romanian), is a Latin-based form with strong Slavic elements.
Rumania sent its prime minister and an ambassador to represent it at the peace conference at the Reichenbach Falls in Switzerland. However, before the start of the conference the ambassador was kidnapped and replaced by René Heron, an assassin, as part of Professor James Moriarty's plot to start a world war. Heron was supposed to murder the German chancellor, but was stopped at the last minute by Dr John Watson, who tackled him to the ground and caused his shot to miss. Holmes later asks Moriarty what he has done with the ambassador, but Moriarty refuses to answer the question.
