Lord Robert Arthur Talbot Gascoyne-Cecil, 3rd Marquess of Salisbury was a Conservative British politician and three-time prime minister under Queen Victoria.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows[]

In 1891, Lord Salisbury travelled to Switzerland to attend a peace summit aimed at reducing tensions between France and Germany. He brought with him as an advisor – the eminent professor James Moriarty, whom he considered a personal friend. Unbeknownst to him, however, Moriarty was actually behind all the events that were increasing tension in Europe, including the bombing of Strasbourg and the murder of Alfred Meinhard. When he enters the ballroom at the castle he is in the company of Moriarty, though the professor is soon called away by Sherlock Holmes, and Lord Salisbury turns to greet another diplomat. Later, when the diplomats are arranging themselves for the official picture, he is seen seated between the German ambassador and the German chancellor, to whom he is talking: the chancellor later dives behind Lord Salisbury when René Heron attempts to assassinate him. After Heron is subdued, Mycroft Holmes sends his servant Carruthers to protect the Prime Minister.[1]
