Professor Coram was an elderly, invalid scholar who lived at Yoxley Old Place in the countryside of Kent, England. Secretly he was really a Russian revolutionary named Sergius who had betrayed his comrades to the Tsar's authorities and escaped to England. Sherlock Holmes investigated the murder of his secretary, Willoughby Smith, in "The Adventure of the Golden Pince-Nez". His former wife, Anna, tracked him down to try and recover some letters in his possession that would release her friend Alexis from a labor-camp in Siberia.
