Mrs. Stoner was the sister of Honoria Westphail (who lived near Harrow), as well as the young widow of Major-General Stoner of the Bengal Artillery. From her first marriage, she had twin daughters: Julia and Helen Stoner. She also had a considerable sum of money - almost £1100 a year.
When her daughters were only two-years-old, Mrs. Stoner married again, to Dr. Grimesby Roylott. It appeared that her second marriage was a success, and her second husband was decent to both her and her daughters, for Helen never mentioned any of the family suffering any ill-treatment whatsoever from him.
Shortly after the family moved to England, and when Helen and Julia were only twenty-four-years-old, Mrs. Stoner was killed in a railway accident near Crewe. In her will, she had left her money entirely to Dr. Roylott, but due to the fall in agricultural prices, the annual sum had been diminished to £750, and she had also made a provision: each of her daughters can claim an annual income of £250 in the event of their marriages.
