Lausanne is the capital and largest city of the canton of Vaud, located in the French-speaking part of western Switzerland. It is located on the shores of Lake Geneva. Dr John Watson traveled to Lausanne while investigating the disappearance of Lady Frances Carfax for Sherlock Holmes, an adventure recounted in "The Disappearance of Lady Frances Carfax". Lady Frances' last letter came from the Hôtel National in Lausanne. Watson learns at the hotel that Lady Frances had stayed there for several weeks, apparently happily, but left very suddenly. The only explanation for her disappearance was the appearance of a savage-looking bearded man immediately before her departure. Watson also questioned the manager of the local Cook's travel office, who informed him that Lady Frances left Lausanne for Baden, by a complex route and with unmarked luggage.
