Appearances The Hound of the Baskervilles

Jack Stapleton was an entomologist, schoolmaster, criminal, and the primary antagonist in The Hound of the Baskervilles. He was, unbeknownst to the family, the son of Rodger Baskerville II, and a member of the Baskerville clan. After living some time in Cuba, where he married Miss Beryl García, he purloined a considerable sum of public money, which forced him to flee to England, where he opened an ill-fated school. After the failure of that venture due to an epidemic, he lived for a while on robbery, and eventually plotted to kill off the remaining Baskervilles, in order to get the inheritance money that would come from the estate. The way Jack Stapleton utilised the myth of the hound and his way of seducing and using women to accomplish his job shows his levels of creativity, charm and intellect. Sherlock Holmes himself finds this gentleman 'a hard nut to crack'.
