The Hôtel de Ville, or City Hall of Paris is the headquarters of the Paris city government, which has been located at this spot since 1357. The current façade dates from 1628, though the interior had to be completely rebuilt after the city hall was gutted by arson during the Commune of 1871.

Professor James Moriarty was invited to give a lecture here by the University of Paris. While signing copies of his book, The Dynamics of an Asteroid, afterwards, Colonel Sebastian Moran brought him his ticket to the performance of Don Giovanni at the Paris Opera. However, though Moran had also bought a ticket for himself, Moriarty told him that he would not be needing his, to which Moran responded that he had been looking forward to the opera.[1]
