"My mind rebels at stagnation. Give me problems, give me work, give me the most abstruse cryptogram, or the most intricate analysis, and I am in my own proper atmosphere."
―Sherlock Holmes

Sherlock Holmes (Brett) refers to the on-screen incarnation of Sherlock Holmes, as portrayed by Jeremy Brett in the ITV Granada Television adaptation.

Portrayal in the series[]

This is often said to be the quintessential version of his era, likely due to the extensive research Brett conducted into the great detective, which he gathered together into his 77-page "Baker Street File" on everything from Holmes' mannerisms to his eating and drinking habits.

Holmes was characterised for his eccentric behaviour, such as making rather eccentric hand gestures, bouts of short violent laughter, and his habit of hurling himself to the ground just to look for a footprint and clues.

Appearances[]

This incarnation of Sherlock Holmes appears in every single episode of the series.

However, there are at least two episodes where his screentime was reduced.

In the feature-length episode The Hound of the Baskervilles, Holmes is absent for parts of the story and his presence in it is more implicit, but this is in line with the original novel.

In the later episode "The Mazarin Stone", Jeremy Brett became largely unavailable for filming due to his mounting health problems and could only appear for long enough in the early and final stages of the episode. This prompted rewrites of the screenplay, in order to shift the focus to Mycroft and Dr. Watson solving the case on their own, and inadvertently created an unusual divergence from the original story.
