The Republic of Costa Rica was a nation located in Central America. It was bordered to the north by Nicaragua and to the south by Panama. Its economy was principally dependent on the coffee and banana trades. Unusually for a Latin American nation, it had a long tradition of relatively stable democracy.

The Hound of the Baskervilles[]

Rodger Baskerville II fled to South America in the 1870s to escape being arrested in England, where he died of yellow fever in 1876, and was assumed to be childless. He had, however, secretly married before he died, and was delivered of a son, whom he named Rodger after himself. This son, in turn, stayed in Costa Rica for a while, where he married Beryl García, a native of the country known as a beauty. However, as he had embezzled a good deal of public money, he was soon forced to flee the country with his wife, moving to England and changing his name to Vandeleur. It is very likely their old manservant, Antonio, was likewise with them. On the voyage, he met a tutor suffering from consumption named Fraser, who agreed to help him found a school when they reached the British Isles.

"The Adventure of Black Peter"[]

Numerous Costa Rican securities are among the stocks listed in the "J.H.N." notebook found at the scene of Peter Carey's murder in Forest Row, Sussex.
