Elana March was a crime boss in New York City. She was also Joan Watson's nemesis, being responsible for the death of Andrew Mittal in an attempt to kill Joan herself. Elana was killed in her prison cell. It can be assumed that this happened on orders of Jamie Moriarty, since Holmes' former lover sent Joan a letter saying others were "not welcome at the table" while she and Joan had a game to finish.
