Van Coon originally worked at an international bank, in the Hong Kong department. He used this as a way of covering up his smuggling rare items from China to England, then dropping them off at the Lucky Cat store in London. He was a member of the Black Lotus Tong gang, and had the mark tattooed on the heel of his foot.
Van Coon was shot in the head by Zhi Zhu, another member of the gang, after a cypher was left in the bank. The murder occurred at his own apartment, and was made to look like a suicide. It was first discovered to be a murder when Sherlock Holmes broke into his flat, and deduced that the man must be left-handed, and the bullet hole was on the wrong side of the head for it to have been made by a left-handed person.
After searching his flat, and noting the expensive, feminine handcream, Sherlock discovered that Van Coon was in a relationship with his assistant, Amanda, and that Van Coon stole a hairpin for her. This hairpin was infinitely more valuable than Van Coon had realised, being worth nine million pounds, and this was what he was killed for.
