Beekeeping for beginners is a novella by Laurie R. King and was published digitally on January 1st, 2011. It is regarded as book 10.5 in the Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes mystery series. It was later included in some print versions of Garment of Shadows.

Plot Edit

Sherlock Holmes (along with Mrs. Hudson) has been sent to live in Sussex for his own safety during the early months of World War I. This exile soon leads to boredom and depression, and one day while Holmes is out studying bees (and contemplating his own future) the fifteen-year-old Mary Russell literally stumbles over him. They find that they have similar intellects and outlooks, and Holmes takes Russell under his wing. Russell also views the Holmes household as a refuge from her abusive aunt and cousin, and Holmes assists her in that without Russell's knowledge.

This story describes the events at the beginning of The Beekeepers Apprentice from the point of view of Sherlock Holmes.
